Rescue Organization: Saving Pyrs In Need

We got the call from a local animal control facility ¬– a Great Pyrenees was literally at death’s door, but we could “rescue” him if we wanted to go take a look at him that very afternoon. Another shelter had sent him over to be euthanized the next morning.

No wonder they thought that was his best option, and no wonder he seemed to agree. Covered with mange and sores, not much hair, several lumps and a huge mass in front of one mangled ear, he had no interest in getting up to walk out of his cell. He had to be carried out to our car. We took him straight to the vet who, not surprisingly, found him heartworm positive and gave me that look that said “I think you lost your mind, saving this old rag.” Not knowing whether she might be right, we nurtured him along anyway, got rid of the mange, and had the mass removed from the ear.

In amazement we watched him come back to life, grow a long beautiful coat and become a splendid and happy fellow. He gets to sleep inside on the bed on hot days and bark all night for absolutely no reason except joy. I adopted him myself, not because he was unadoptable otherwise, but because other people kept asking to adopt him, and I knew I did not want to see him go.
